Untangling the Web
With the new year well underway, it’s a good time to remember the axiom that underlies all successful Web sites: Change is good. Search engines use extremely complicated algorithms to decide which sites to present to users for a particular search including seeking relevant key words and search engine-friendly design. But one major factor that is often overlooked is change.
All search engines send frequent “crawlers,” or “spiders,” out into the Web to search for new sites and changes on existing sites. They use the information gathered to update their own files and keep their search results relevant to users. When a site has added or changed content since the last time they looked, search engines interpret this in a positive way; they give that site higher scores for relevance and thus are more likely to present it as an option when someone is using a search engine.
Change doesn’t mean redesigning your site over and over. Simply adding industry-relevant content–or changing existing content–on a regular basis is enough to improve your site’s search engine ranking. You don’t have to change a lot. If you have a company newsletter, perhaps you could archive it regularly on your site. Maybe you could add a simple blog to give updated information to your customers. Even going in and changing around a few paragraphs or re-writing a couple of sentences helps. When you make these changes–even small ones–search engines notice. This means your site may come up more often when customers do Internet searches, making it easier for customers to find you. This year, make updating your Web site a regular part of your business. The experts at Nu-Designs can show you simple and affordable ways to change and update your Web site’s content on a consistent basis with a minimum of hassle.
